Geothermal Workshop on Large-scale Implementation of Energy Geostructure

We are delighted to announce that the Geothermal workshop ‘Large-scale implementation of energy geostructure will be hosted by Dr Zili Li and Dr. Budi Zhao on the afternoon of Tuesday 29th of August, prior to the ISLMG conference formally starting from Wednesday 30th.

Energy geostructures refer to a specialized type of ground heat exchanger that is installed within ground contact structures such as retaining walls, piles, tunnels, and other buried infrastructure. This technology has been studied extensively, including pilot sites, and is relatively mature.

However, there are still technical and non-technical barriers preventing large implementation.

1) Challenges include integration issues, upscaling from individual structures to geothermal district heating, sustainability, and lack of a database of knowledge regarding existing energy geostructures.

2) Retrofitting existing buildings and/or geostructures and non-technical issues such as legislation, financial incentives, social impact, lack of standardization, or underdeveloped workforce skills are additional challenges.

3) Opportunities such as waste heat storage and balancing energy loads at district scale are still being explored. This workshop will bring together experts from various fields in different countries across Europe and beyond, aiming to reduce barriers and promote collaborative, large-scale energy-geostructure development.
